Words on the picture

Add a short line of text straight onto a photo, so the offer is readable before anyone reads your caption. It costs nothing and takes about ten seconds.

The rule

Instagram and Facebook draw their own buttons on top of your picture. The headline is kept out of those strips for you.

How it works

  1. In the Composer, get to step 4, The picture, and design or upload a photo.
  2. Open Words on the picture and type your headline. Keep it short: it shrinks to fit, so a paragraph comes out tiny.
  3. Pick Top, Middle or Bottom, and use How wide? to say how far across the photo the words may run.
  4. Leave Show where Instagram covers the picture ticked. The shaded strips are the account name up top and the reply box underneath. They are not part of your photo, and your words stay out of them.
  5. Press Put it on the picture.

The photo in the preview updates, and that is exactly what gets posted.

Good to know

  • It is free. No credits, however many times you change your mind.
  • The headline uses your own brand typeface, the one set in Settings → Branding.
  • A story leaves less room than a feed post, and a reel less again, because a reel also has the like and comment buttons up the right-hand side.
  • How wide? is how far the words run across before they wrap onto the next line. At 100% a headline stretches over the whole photo; narrow it for a tidy column down the middle. The lettering sizes itself to whatever you pick, so a narrow column comes out smaller.
  • Shade behind the words puts a soft dark panel under the text. Leave it on for busy photos; turn it off for a plain background.
  • To change the wording later, reopen the draft and edit it. Your clean photo is kept, so nothing is regenerated and nothing is charged.
  • Words have to be added here, by you. A post scheduled to go out on its own cannot gain a headline later.
