Buying an ingredient loose

Some things come with no container. You buy flour and beef by the kilo and oil by the litre, straight off the scale. There is no bag or bottle to describe.

The rule

If you buy it loose by weight, pick the weight as the physical form. There is no pack, so there is no net weight to fill in.

How it works

  1. Open the ingredient and find the Cost & packaging card.
  2. Open Physical form. The list has three groups: sold loose by weight (kg, g, L, ml), counted by the piece (each, unit, piece), and in a fixed container (bottle, can, bag, box).
  3. Pick kg (loose) for flour. The question about net weight goes away.
  4. Type the price per kg at the top.
  5. The app works out the cost per gram. A recipe that uses 200 g of flour is costed for you.

Good to know

  • The price line follows your choice. Pick kg (loose) and it reads Price per kg.
  • You can buy in kg and cook in g. Set the recipe unit to g and the app does the sum.
  • A 25 kg sack at one price is not loose. That is a pack. Pick bag and give it a net weight of 25 kg.
  • If you once made up a fake bag for a per-kilo item and saw a unit mismatch warning, change the form to kg (loose) and the warning goes.
