Ingredient categories

Categories group your ingredient list. Wines, Cheeses, Fruit and veg, Spices, Kitchen production. The chip on each row is its category. So are the headers and the filters.

The rule

A category does two jobs at once. It groups the rows, and it says what extra fields those rows carry. Change the category and both change together.

How it works

  1. Open Settings → Inventory categories. Each line is one category, with its emoji, its name, how many rows use it and what extra fields it adds.
  2. A new venue starts empty. Press Add the standard set to get the usual list at once: pasta and flour, dairy, meat, fresh produce, wines, spirits, packaging, cleaning and more. Each one arrives with its extra fields ready.
  3. Press + Add category to make your own. Give it a name and an emoji.
  4. Add custom fields if the group needs them. Wines get grape, vintage and region. Cheeses get milk type and how long it was aged.
  5. Save. The category shows in the list filters at once, and every row you put in it gets the new fields.
  6. Every category has a type: Food, Beverage, Other or Retail. The type picks the tab the rows sit under.

Good to know

  • Other is for things that are not food or drink: boxes, napkins, cleaning liquid. They never count in your food cost.
  • Retail is for things you sell to take home, like a loaf or a jar of your own sauce. They are kept apart from kitchen food cost.
  • Removing a custom field deletes that value from every row in the category. Do it on purpose.
  • You cannot delete a category that still has rows. Move the rows first.
  • Renaming is free. Every row shows the new name the next time you open the page.
  • Pressing Add the standard set twice is safe. It only adds what is missing, and never touches a group you have already changed.
  • Only the owner or a manager can add, change or delete a category.
